Being stylish is not about how much you spend

There seems to be no end to the demands on our hard-earned money; in the meantime the online and print press are bombarding us with tantalising images of the latest fashions and 'must-haves'. What is a girl to do?

In recent years, mixing lower-end price tags with quality pieces has pretty much become a trend in itself. Fashion can dictate styles but it also responds to universal moods. Economic belt-tightening (pardon the pun) means that we have to become more resourceful. This can actually be more fun, and more importantly, it forces us to take a step back and think more carefully about the clothing we buy: do we really need it, does it really suit us and will we get much wear out of it?

This has always been the colour me beautiful approach: creating a successful wardrobe for your personality, your lifestyle and your budget. Your wardrobe 'portfolio' should have styles and fabrics that work with your body shape, colours that flatter you and the overall looks should reflect your personality. You should be able to combine pieces easily and enjoy wearing each garment you own.

Of course, you might have one or two quirky items or unique pieces that won't go with everything (especially if you are Creative or Dramatic type) but you shouldn't have lots of pieces that only go with one other thing. What a wardrobe shouldn't be is bursting at the seams with all the latest styles and great labels which you find yourself gazing at wondering how to wear them.

You should allow time every six months or so, to 'shop your wardrobe'. That means that before you hit the stores with 'I need' in mind, you simply take the time to put your wardrobe in order and revisit some pieces you have not worn for a while (why ???). You might well be surprised at the gems you'll find hidden in there. Maybe you should bring in a colour me beautiful image consultant or stylist to do it with you, as one can be a little emotional at times with some clothes which remind you of events/people, but really do they need to take that space if you have not worn them for a while?

Looking good isn't a luxury, it is something we all deserve and can achieve without having to spend a fortune. For many people, clothes shopping and dressing well and appropriately, for your age and/or the occasion, can be a chore because you simply don't know what suits you. You will have a few pieces you enjoy wearing and feel good in, but because you don't necessarily understand why you look good in those pieces, you can't easily replicate it. You have to understand what styles work for your figure and for your personality (as well as your budget and lifestyle of course) and do some research to find out the best places to shop for them.

The great thing about the current mood in fashion is that it is all about your personal style, and even if the universal mood changes when economies bounce back, it should still be about your personal style.

You will never go wrong with some good quality, well-fitting classic pieces such as navy, pewter, grey and do we dare say - black - pants/skirts; some plain top too will see you through many years: a good white (your white!) shirt; a few plain well-fitting tops in your colours; a couple of dresses - in the right shape for you, will see you through for months on end, with just a few accessories to create newness.

Pastel Perfect

Pastel Perfect

Sugary, pale, ice-cream, soft, sorbet, light - call them what you will, but these pastel shades come in every hue this season. You will find colours form apricot to peach, mint to lemon, sky blue to baby pink, eau-de-nil to buttermilk. They may not have the impact of bolder colours, but they are pretty and uplifting and a useful addition to your spring/summer wardrobe.

How to wear pastels

* Most of us don't go through daily life looking like we have fallen out of the fashion pages, so forget the head-to-toe pastel look and bring in your medium greys, your denims and your whites to mix with your pastels. Lots of pastel is fine for under 25's or on smaller frames - larger frames need something with more ?personality'.

* Adding a bit of a mint/peach/lemon (whichever shade suits you best) to a pair of dark work trousers is a nice subtle way to bring in colour to your work wardrobe without being too bold. However, if it's gravitas you are after, forget it.

* Watch out for the weight of the fabric. Pastels lend themselves to chiffon, gauzy knits and the lightest of linen. Make sure that these materials are right for you and your bone structure.

* Take care with the transparency of the fabric and the colour of your underwear - a black bra under a top in a light shade is a big no-no.

* Before you invest in these gorgeous light shades, consider the amount of TLC and dry-leaning/laundering they require.

For more exciting colour combinations in this spring trend, visit a
Colour Me Beautiful consultant and learn how to put the right colours together for you, and you only.

Who can wear what?

* If you have light hair, light eyes, pale skin, pastels are made for you. But you don't want to disappear either in a haze of pale colours, so make sure you wear make-up and accessories which will blend gently with your outfit.

* If you have dark hair and dark eyes, it is best to keep the pastel shades to one piece of what you are wearing - colour blocking will be perfect for you.

Next

* If you have auburn hair, freckles (ie. warm colouring), make your pastels work for you: apricot, primrose, mint but maybe wear them with slightly stronger shades of orange (big this season), amber or purple.

* The cools amongst you (ashy blondes, silver haired, and those on the way of becoming silver-haired) will look great in tones of duckegg, rose pink, light aqua toned down with medium and light grey for an elegant and summery look.

* If you have piercing blue eyes (or green) with dark hair and porcelain skin, go for contrast and colour blocking, even if the colour blocking comes from a bead necklace. Think a light aqua top with a Chinese blue necklace, and royal blue slim trousers (or blue jeans).

* Those of you with Soft and muted colouring will keep their pastels colours right in the middle: think Verbena and Soft Violet put together.

Pastels & Make-up

The make-up colours you choose to wear with your pastels will very much depend on your personal colouring. However, you don't want to go either too strong - it will overpower rather than compliment the pastels, or too faint -you will disappear in a haze of paleness!

make up

* Go for either stronger lips or stronger eyes

* Keep your make-up defined and groomed

* Don't forget your eyebrows and mascara (or have your eye lashes tinted). The autumn catwalks were full of bright blue mascaras, so be on-trend and if blue features in your make-up palette, don't forget Colour Me Beautiful's navy mascara.

Choose Your Spring Jacket

Spring cover-up has never been so colourful and stylish!

It's not just a question of keeping the chill off, it's about investing in a jacket that you can show off and enjoy wearing. So, here are our top jacket buys for the new season.

The Modern Blazer

The modern blazer comes in a range of cuts, lengths and colours so we're not just talking about the classic tailored look here. Your blazer might be anything from a collarless box style, a peplum or a relaxed boyfriend look. It has become an enduring alternative to the cardigan because there are so many cuts avaliable to choose from.

It is a better option for later in the season when it's warmer, but you can still wear a jersey underneath it on cooler days. It's always worth having a couple of blazers in your wardrobe as they can make a simple outfit something a bit more special. They can add shape and a stylish edge and this season they will add colour too; there are blazers in the most wonderful range of shades from light
pastels to bold brights, so you won't be short of choice.

Style Tips:
pick a colour that looks great on you and works with a number of outfits and make sure you get the right cut for your figure.

The Sporty Parka

The lightweight parka never really goes out of style, but this season it gets an Olympic update with a stylish sporty edge. It's always a winner for British springs and summers as it's easy to carry with you anywhere, ready for that unexpected shower. The new look is more neat casual than slouchy sportswear and there are plenty colours to choose from.

Choose one of your best shades and you'll be set for spring, plus it will brighten your spirits on a grey day. Or, why not make like an Olympic number one and go for gold - the metallic parka adds a touch of glitz.

Style Tip:
the only rule here is: don't be boring!

The Barbour

If you haven't seen what is going on at Barbour, then now is the time to have a look. You may be surprised to find that they have restyled and updated their collection. New looks offer the classic design with modern a twist and some come in a range of fabulous colours.

See their Rainbow International Bright Brass range with shades from navy to fuchsia to yellow. It's not a cheap buy but you will be investing in a top quality British brand. Barbour's padded styles and wax fabric has certainly inspired many other brands to imitate them, so you will see plenty copycats for both spring and 2012 which may suit your budget better. It's worth investing in the look.

Style Tip:
the Barbour generally comes with lots of pockets and detail so, be careful not to go too bulky if you are curvy, although you will find the lightweight fabrics easier to wear.

The Waterfall Knit

For those who prefer a more informal and comfortable look then a knit will probably suit you better. The waterfall knit is still popular this year so you can bring out your pieces from previous seasons, but you might want to invest in a new one in a great colour.

Style Tip:
check the scale and length of the garment to ensure that it doesn't overwhelm you.

Fashion is going print mad for spring with designer Mary Katrantzou leading the way with her exotic and elegant designs. If you’ve missed out on her collection in Top Shop (now sold out!), you might want to look at Marni’s more subtle but quirky patterns available in H&M from 8th March. Many people are wary of investing in prints for a number of reasons, which are mainly a) because they are not as versatile as plain garments, b) we tend to feel they can date more quickly and c) they are not sure if print suits them or not. Firstly, the good news is that good designs stay around for a while, so if you pick up a good piece you should get a fair amount of wear out of it. Secondly, prints can inject a bit of interest and fun into your wardrobe and you don’t need to worry about adding to the piece because it makes a statement in itself.

The most important thing with choosing prints is, knowing which ones suit you and therefore, which ones to invest in. The guidelines for choosing your prints are:

- Get the right size print for you. Even if you are confident about pattern, a large print on a small frame can look overwhelming; equally, a dainty print on a larger frame will have no impact.
- Choose the right design for you. Think about your body shape AND your style personality. For example, strong angular graphics can be unflattering on curvy figures and bold florals will seem too fussy if you’re either a Natural, Classic or City Chic personality who prefer will more casual (Natural), classic or simple but elegant and coordinated (City Chic) looks.
- Be careful how you wear it: busy pattern around wide hips or a large bust will appear to add more volume so it is better to wear it away from your ‘problem’ areas.
- Choose the right combination of colours. Especially if you wear the pattern close to your face.
- You should feel good when you wear it!

The creative personalities will love the more inventive designs for spring (some of which are updated old classics) such as paisley in vivid colour, dainty and bold animal shapes, tropical themes, oriental flowers and more. For those of us who are not quite so creative or confident about print there are some fabulous new striped looks in a range of shades and the classic spot in various guises too.

If patterned clothes are not for you but you like to dabble in new trends, why not try prints in accessories.

Fresh Make-up for a Feel Good February

At this time of year we all want to look healthy and glowing and to achieve that, we need to be clever with our cosmetics.

So, whether it's a romantic Valentine's dinner, a job interview or you are planning a proposal of marriage - it is leap year after all ladies! - make sure you look radiant with your best make-up looks.

Is your make-up making the most of YOU?

It's easy to stick to old make-up routines because you ?don't have time' to try new ones or you think the old ones still work fine. But, is your make-up making the most of you?

Think about it: is your make up saying 'sexy' or 'overdone'? 'Subtle' or 'washed-out'? Part of the problem is that we inherit and pick up advice, habits - good and bad, and product knowledge from Mums, sisters and friends plus all the beauty information we can absorb but don't always consider what actually works for us.

Before and After from Colour Me Beautiful's Make-up Manual (Hamlyn)

What look should I go for at this time of year?

You are trying to acheive a Spring-like glow in the middle of Winter, so you want to keep your make-up simple, fresh and as radiant as possible. Your skin needs to look its best so look after it and use products that suit it. Do invest in a good blusher, don't go too heavy on eye make-up, use highlighter accordingly.

Take a tip from forties Hollywood camera-ready make-up with good-looking skin (even if it means extra foundation at this time of year), great eye lashes and fabulous lipstick.

There is more to make-up than meets the eye

The best lesson you can learn about make-up is what suits YOU. You need to understand your face shape, your colouring and your personality. Once you have mastered this you can create the looks that complement you AND ensure that you send out the right signals, whatever the situation or occasion.

Choosing the right colours

There are thousands of make-up colours out there - some will make you look radiant, while others can make you look unhealthy or age you prematurely.

Once you understand your colouring type and your best make-up colours you can limit the cosmetics you buy to selecting only those that make you look fabulous. Plus, the recommended shades will work with your wardrobe too!

Our Highlighter is back!

There are some products we just can't do without and this is one of them!

Our fabulous Highlighter is back by demand, so you can finish off your fresh make-up look with a little extra Spring-like glow.

Have you tried the new eye shades in your palette?

Colour Me Beautiful introduced a selection of gorgeous new colours to the eye shadow range last summer, so if you haven't experimented with them yet then make sure you try them out for Spring 2012.

Revise, Revitalise & Accessorise: the New Year Wardrobe Update

We all reinvent ourselves in various ways throughout life and a new year inspires us to 'renew' ourselves. It might be changing a small part of our weekly routine, getting more exercise, trying something new or giving our home or personal look a bit of an update.

One of the easiest new year pick-me-ups is a little style revamp but where do you start? The best place to begin is your wardrobe; so, before you go out and make the most of the high street discounts, assess the old before you start buying the new.
The Wardrobe Assessment

When assessing your wardrobe, don't just flick through the hangers, take everything out and hang it around the room, lay it out on the bed and move things about. Sometimes it takes seeing garments in a different light, literally, to see how you can give them an update. Whilst it is wise to hang on to some really good pieces, don't keep things just because they are good if they don't suit you. Someone else will make better use of them.

Keepers for 2012

Shapes and Styles

Midi and maxi skirt lengths are sticking around as are feminine fabrics such as chiffon and silks. There is still a vintage 40's/50's influence with looks that hail the female shape such as full skirts and curve-flattering shift dresses. Fortunately, dresses are everywhere so pull out all your dresses and work them with different separates, colours and accessories to make them feel renewed.

Patterns

Unusual graphics, banding and bold floral patterns appear with a new twist. To give your patterns a current look you can mix them up a little. Unless you're a real creative or fashion forward personality, go with just as much as you feel comfortable with; it should suit your personality and overall look. Texture is almost as popular as pattern with embellishments and overlays such as lace, devore, metals and sequins so if you don't have any, make that a new little buy.

Colours

Whatever you do in 2012, if you don't have any red then make sure you invest in your best red shades, it's the colour of the year. Fortunately, colour is still a big story so you can keep all your great colours and try wearing them in different ways. Key shades for next season (apart from reds) are greens, oranges and blues. Mix your red shades together (or green shades or blue shades..), wear an entire block of colour or wear a more subtle shade or a neutral (e.g. grey, cream, camel) shade with a stronger colour.

Accessories - the easiest way to update

Accessories need an update too and they are a great way to revamp your look with little outlay. You've seen previous articles about one dress with several different looks, the accessories are key here.

The neck has become the focus for accessories with the scarf being a must-have in recent seasons. The most current neck detail is the collar. You can buy a top with a pretty collar or find a collar accessory to give your neat jerseys or cardigans a new look. If you're crafty and creative you can design your own.

Not everyone suits detail around the neck or décolletage so if this look isn't for you then make your new accessory a handbag. Find a great new shape or colour that works for your style. You won't go wrong with a day clutch bag to look utterly on-trend!
